The numbe r of desirable building lots, near .the business center has been much: re duced cf late.', Cls. i - " r . , Mokk Homes. Meksti.;E, P. Wharton, J.Z-Wvi Scott an. J. A. Hodgin have purchased lots in the Keogh addition On the South side on which they will utld ine residences. The houses' will front on Pearson street. Mr. Wharton has already be gun his residence. It will be one of the finest in the city. ' Vol. 6. Greensboro, N. C, Tuesday, February 5, 18819. No. 212- We are pleased to- learn that the condition of Alpheui Causey con tinues to improve, and that hie. inju ries ere less serious than was sup posed. ' -Mr. T. A. Davidson of Gibson- ville, was here a short while this morning on the way down the C. F. & Y. V. Railroad to attend the bu rial of an uncle who had died in ti e South and been carried to the county of Chatham near the .Gulf for inteiv tnent. ' Mr. W. C. Bain, who has just finished a contract for Mr. Julian S. Carr, of Durham, in the completion of his fine residence, was here yes terday and remains over today look ing at real estate here with an idea of locating. We trust that he may find it to his interest to purchase property here. If the present Legislature shall fail to do anything fur the improve ment of our country roads, the next best thing would be . to lease the Legislature -with all the lands in the State to a syndicate of capitalists for 49 years, during which time the roads shall be made into pikes -for the ad vantage of posterity. - : r ,w Charles Dick, colored, had a trap set for rabbits, baited with green apple,, but an opossum came along Who had a fancy for that kind of food, but belore ne had feasted to the Tulj he found that he was a prisoner Charles came along and made the captive, a fixed fact of history. The amount of goad1 cheer ; to be had af the expense of that opossum cannot be estimated, in' dollars j in scents, perhaps it may be. . V , Vessels on the sea may be im pelled either by the " winds or by steam, or by the two combined, yet in all' the changes that have occurred since navigation began no substitute has, been j found -for the rudder by which the direction of thS vessel7 is controlled. It is not enough that we oo we musf'go the right way and unless we have the rudder in use the faster we go the sooner we reach our, ruin. ; Miss Hattie Sampson,1 of South Greensboro, has a very fine display of her handiwork in crayon portraits and stuffed and mounted fowls, birds and small animals. It is worth one's while to call and see the col ection. A full size cat, , a rabbit, some hens, a peafowl and a goose are among'the collection, with some others not named. v The rabbit is very natural, and gives one a fine impression of that animal when fully on the alert and ready to spring up and bound away. r , , v -Mr. T. T Brooks, who has just returned from fieidsville,' informs us that at a meeting of stockholders' special committee yesterday, it was decided to go on vigorously and at once with the cotton factory eater, prise, so as to' be ready for spinning, by the first of June. Mr. Gamble, of Wilmington, Delaware, was pres ent at the meeting, and. much spirit was evinced. The site of the factory is on this side of the town on the left of the railroad. Possibly Jreensooro will send a committee to contract the nianutactunng spirit and .' spread it among our citizens. Murdered.ri(t. Robbed. I 1 ... i A certain sensational sheet publish ed in New York k advertised by cir cular here at containing an account f the "Murder and Robbery ol Eliz abeth Brown at Greensboro, N. C, by two unknowa men." Our laws prohibit the aals of sale! sensational sheet in this town, and the announce meat made in. it that Elizabeth Brown was murdered wheo she was not, only showt that the la prohibiting the tale of said sheet here it a proper one. It is. quite probable for the rascals are up to anything of the sort that the perversion of the truth as to Elizabeth Brown may have keen measure of retaliation for the law which makes it cn miaul to tell that filthy journal here. It wis bad enough that Elizabeth Brown 'was assaulted and robbed, but it ia probable that such cases would be increased by a free circulation of. the sheet in ques tion, which makes boya and young men familiar with all , horrible and blood curdling things, f j - ' Above all, the gentleman U truth ful.
